Background:
Wei Wuxian was born to a cultivator and a servant but lost both of his parents as a child. He was forced to live on the streets after that, fighting vicious dogs for whatever scraps of food he could find. Eventually, he was found by Jiang Fengmian, leader of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect and close friend of his parents. After that, Wei Wuxian was taken back to Lotus Pier and raised alongside the man's own children, Jiang Cheng and Yanli.

Growing up, he proved himself to be a gifted cultivator (basically a sorcerer with a sword who fights ghosts and assorted baddies) to the point where he surpassed even Jiang Cheng. Despite the occasional (frequent) bickering, the two remained as close as actual brothers. As a teenager Wei Wuxian was sent along with his siblings to Cloud Recesses, home of the esteemed Gusu Lan Sect, for studies. However the only thing Wei Wuxian seriously applied himself to was annoying the second young master, one of the two jades himself, Lan Wangji. Like fire and water, the two could not be more opposite. Yet it was in Lan Wangji where Wei Wuxian found his match.

After getting them both into trouble (some would argue that it's a common theme in this series), they also discover a piece of the dangerous Yin metal together. The first piece of this mysterious metal is already held by the ruling Qishan Wen Sect, who are getting more and more out of control. They're using the metal to turn people into puppets, and are getting a lot of cultivators and innocent people killed in the process. It's up to Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji to find the remaining pieces of the Yin metal before the Wen Sect does, at which point they would be virtually unstoppable.

There are adventures and dangers, some not so subtle flirting and a giant turtle monster. Ultimately both Cloud Recesses and Lotus Pier are left in ruins at the hands of the Wen sect. Even worse, so was Wei Wuxian's brother. Jiang Cheng's golden core, the thing inside of cultivators that stores and directs spiritual energy and allows them to cultivate, was melted at the hands of Wen Zhuliu. This doomed Jiang Cheng to a mediocre life, which isn't a good look for a sect leader. This along with the brutal murder of his parents sent Jiang Cheng into a deep depression. Unable to stand his brother's suffering, Wei Wuxian came up with one of his outrageous schemes: to secretly switch his own golden core with Jiang Cheng.

Unfortunately this left him wide open when the Wen Clan caught up with him.

Wei Wuxian was beaten and dropped into the Burial Mounds, considered a place of no return for body or soul. Except Wei Wuxian did return, and brought some "wicked" new tricks that he'd learned with him. With the help of a piece of Yin metal that he'd accidentally discovered back in giant turtle monster cave. It and the resentful energy of the place both called to him, and this is where his demonic cultivation was born.

Using resentful energy and spirits instead of power from a golden core, this form of cultivation was extremely taboo and untouched, as much for the harm that it did mind and body as anything. But Wei Wuxian had no other choice for defense and revenge. Instead of a sword, he used a flute to call on the powerful and terrifying energy. But as feared, Wei Wuxian's temper and control became strained, especially when witnessing injustice, making him seem notably changed from the more light-hearted youth of before. Ultimately ostracised Wei Wuxian became known as the "Yiling Patriarch" after returning to those Yiling Burial Mounds with the Wen clan remnants that he rescued, but even the peace that he found there proved to be temporary.

Personality:

The Jiang Clan of Yunmeng is in many ways less strict than other clans, allowing their children to follow their own hearts rather than forcing them into things. Though a son of the sect leader through adoption rather than blood, no one embodies following one's own heart more than Wei Wuxian. He is bold and outspoken, especially when he witnesses something unjust, refusing to just follow the system that's set in place around him. Naturally this almost always comes with consequences, whether it's being forced to kneel in the courtyard or being marked for death. None of this deters Wei Wuxian. As shameless as he can be at times, he truly does want to protect the weak and fight against evil. The cultivating world should be filled with this spirt, but Wei Wuxian learns the hard way that people can say one thing and do (or not do) another. Unlike that, Wei Wuxian insists on being a man of his word, even when it costs him dearly.

Being courageous isn't the only times that his boldness is apparent. In fact, one's first impression of Wei Wuxian would be that of an incredibly mischievous and fun-loving young man. He loves to drink, spar, gamble, and drink some more. This might be all well and good back at his home of Lotus Pier, but Wei Wuxian doesn't alter his behavior even while visiting the much (much) stricter Lan Clan at Cloud Recesses. There Wei Wuxian really shows just how difficult it is for him to behave himself. Wei Wuxian is impulsive, always living in the moment. By his own admission, it's fun to do something forbidden, and it's almost like he breaks one of the over 3,000 rules at Cloud Recesses with every breath. No amount of punishment is capable of changing the way that he is. He's not even remorseful when he is punished, often playing or struggling to stay awake through it. Punishment is nothing new for him, not to mention that being quiet and still aren't Wei Wuxian's strong suits.

And yet it seems easy for Wei Wuxian to make friends. He has always been well-liked and even an influence (for better or worse) on others. Lan Quiren commented that disciples had never dared to misbehave at Cloud Recesses until Wei Wuxian showed up. He's someone who's hard to overlook, lively and cheerful and almost always wearing a smile. His mischievous and sometimes childish nature is the kind that just makes him more likable. But if you do ignore him, well, you might just end up with him trying to be your friend even more. Hurt the weak or innocent, and it's a different story entirely. Wei Wuxian lacks patience during these moments, and becomes a far more threatening person.

He is incorrigible one moment, and displaying surprising intelligence the next, whether it's from reciting lessons that he's learned and memorized, reasoning through things, or noticing that which has escaped most people's attention. His cleverness helped him in making new spells and even devices like the Compass of Evil (which did pretty much what it says on the tin). He is extremely adaptable, coming up with new ways to balance things out after the loss of his golden core.

Though he's most often smiling, Wei Wuxian does take important things seriously, he just holds little regard for the system or rules around him when they are unjust or don't make sense. Wei Wuxian is loyal to his family, friends, and anyone who's done him a kindness, refusing to forsake them even if it would cost him his own life. It's unfortunate that whether it's through his mischief or good intentions, Wei Wuxian seems to bring misfortune to those around him. His serious side is quickest to show itself for the sake of others. He takes more offense on behalf of those he cares about than for himself. Say what you want about him, but hold your tongue when it comes to his older sister or Lan Wangi. He's made a vow to protect those who are weaker, and he proves to be true to his word when he goes against literally everyone to defend those remains of the Wen clan who weren't guilty of any wrongdoing. For the right thing, he's willing to risk it all.

People are constantly accusing Wei Wuxian of being arrogant, and he does have his moments, especially when the negative energy surrounding him starts getting in. But more often than not, it's just Wei Wuxian being good at what he does and refusing to apologize for it. He always shined in Lotus Pier, and he definitely doesn't like being told what to do. But in truth, Wei Wuxian is an incredibly self-sacrificing individual. He gave up his own golden core for Jiang Cheng, dooming himself instead of his brother. Such a thing was unheard of, but Wei Wuxian wanted it kept a secret. He also gave up everything to protect a handful of people who weren't even from his own clan. Power was something he sought through necessity not ambition. And yet people were very quick to assign all sorts of notorious deeds to him after he becomes the Yiling Patriarch. People would frighten their children with tales of him, or trade them around for entertainment over a bottle of liquor. Most of these stories were exaggerated or flat out untrue, and Wei Wuxian never claimed any of them. If he does things, he does them without regret, but he won't admit to things that he didn't do.

Overall Wei Wuxian is a good man with a bad reputation and more tragedy than he deserved. He is resourceful and powerful with his demonic cultivation, but not a monster. Lan Wangji can vouch for that...if you can get him to talk at all.

Weaknesses/Temptations:
Generally, Wei Wuxian is someone who wants to defend the weak and live his life with no regrets. It all sounds very noble, but it was this very promise that led him off the "right" path in his own world. When left with no other choice, Wei Wuxian turned to demonic cultivation. This path was taboo and untouched for a reason - desecrating graves and using the dead meant that they had no chance of finding peace in the afterlife. It was disrespecting other peoples' ancestors. Wei Wuxian didn't see it this way, viewing resentful energy as more of an untapped resource. He stands by his own perception of right and wrong, whether or not it's actually flawed.

This is also what led him to protecting the weak and defenseless, even when it meant breaking the promises that he'd made to his own family. The series often brings up questions about what's right or wrong, and Wei Wuxian is always at the center of these conflicts. He's proven that he'll follow his own path, consequences be damned. In a similar vein, Wei Wuxian can also be foolishly self-sacrificing, willing to take blame and endure punishments for the sake of those that he cares about.

He also has a weakness for alcohol, a side of him that is rowdy and unapologetic, along with an attitude that can range from playfully cheeky to darkly arrogant. But perhaps his biggest issue when he enters the game is the harm that's been done to his body, mind, and temperament from the resentful energy that he harnessed to do his bidding as a demonic cultivator. This has left him a little unstable, quicker to anger, and therefore quicker to give in to darker thoughts and actions.

Powers/Abilities:
Demonic Cultivation: A forbidden type of cultivation founded by Wei Wuxian himself. Without a golden core to rely on for storing and controlling spiritual energy, Wei Wuxian was forced to look elsewhere. It only seemed natural to him to harnesses the resentful energy of the dead, or even get fresh corpses to fight for him. He does this through music, whether it be by whistling or (most often) a flute. This type of cultivation is hard on the body and temperament, so Wei Wuxian isn't as physically strong as his counterparts.

Talismans: Another thing that he is forced to rely on more, Wei Wuxian can write or alter a paper talisman with his own blood for things such as protective wards, create fire, etc.

Paper Metamorphosis: Animating little paper men with his soul to deliver messages or spy. There are dangers to this technique - the paper is only as strong as paper, and if it's hurt, Wei Wuxian's body is hurt.

Empathy - The ability to look into the memories of spirits by essentially letting them possess him. It's a dangerous technique that's rarely attempted.
